  12th January 2010. 4.53 p.m. Magnitude 7.0 Mw. Shallow focus - depth 13 km. Epicentre 20km west of Port-au-Prince.

  
  

  The earthquake was caused by the North American Plate sliding past the Caribbean Plate along a conservative margin. The plates move in the same direction but at different speeds.

  Haiti Earthquake 2010 – impacts and responses.

  
  
  

  • - Earth tremors. The land subsided beneath the sea in some places. Some landslides, especially on the coast. A small tsunami occurred due to submarine slides.
  • - 230,000 people killed, 300,000 injured. 3 million people affected by the earthquake. A number of foreign nationals, including UN workers killed.
  • - Widespread damage, particularly in Port au Prince, Jacmel and other cities. 250,000 homes and 30,000 other buildings damaged or destroyed, including the President's Mansion, 60% of government buildings, over 50 hospitals and 1300 schools. The United Nations headquarters in the country was destroyed.
  • - Cracks and faults in roads. Damage to telephone systems. Damage to airports and ports. Damaged water, sewage and electricity systems.
  • - One and a half million people homeless and living in camps. 600,000 people left their homes in Port-au-Prince to stay with families in other parts of Haiti.
  • - Unemployment rose. $ 8.5 billion in damage.
  • - Hospitals full. Bodies stacked in the streets. Cholera - 6,000 died and nearly 700,000 infected.
  • - Little organised response from the government of Haiti. The United Nations led the response. Difficult to get aid into the country in the first few days.
  • - International response. Mobile hospitals, medical teams and drugs. Rescue teams and engineers. Water and food was imported. Tents and tarpaulin sheets sent to establish refugee camps. $ 100 million in aid from the US and $ 330 million from the European Union. Emigrants from Haiti sent money home. Fundraising by charities, e.g. Disasters Emergency Committee of the United Kingdom raised £ 380 million.
  • - The Dominican Republic allowed refugees to cross the border. Countries such as Brazil and the U.S.A. accepted refugees.
  • - Long term support for Haiti. Also the G7 countries, the American Development Bank and the World Bank wrote off the country's debt.
