The Government of Scotland Prohibits Fracking. 3 October 2017 at 16:44
The government of Scotland announced today that they are suspending fracking. Their decision follows a period of public consultation, including 60,000 responses of which 99% opposed fracking. ‘Fracking cannot, and will not, take place in Scotland.’ Said Paul Wheelhouse, the Energy Minister. ‘I can confirm that the Scottish Government has come to the conclusion that it will not support the development of ‘unconventional’ gas and oil in Scotland.
Huge Victory
A spokesperson on behalf of Friends of The Earth, Scotland, said that the decision would be ‘welcomed by the country and around the world.’
‘This is a huge victory for the anti-fracking movement, especially those on the front line opposing the ‘dirty industry’ in Scotland who has been working towards suspension of activities over the last 6 years.
According to Paul Wheelhouse, the government will introduce their support (of bringing fracking to an end) in a debate and vote later on in the month.
