1. The Aims
The resource has been developed for Key stages 2, 3 and 4 and will:
- support schools with getting to know Dylan and his writing including his background and influences, his style and substance and the key messages he sought to communicate;
- encourage pupils to connect with Dylan's work, enabling them to respond to it and reflect upon what it means to us in the 21st century;

Note to teachers: The teaching notes within this website include references to the LNF and the New Programme of Study for 2015 (Learning Wales web-site)
2. An Outline and Suggested Use
- Each key stage has its own set of materials; this includes detailed lesson plans, powerpoints and pupil resource sheets.
- Lesson plans are pitched to be accessible for multiple years within a key stage, with KS2 aimed at Years 3 to 6, KS3 aimed are Years 7 to 9 and KS4 aimed at Years 10 and 11.
- It's also possible to use resources from another key stage e.g. KS3 resources could be used for an able and talented KS2 pupil.
- Lesson plans have been designed so that teachers can use them as a starting point that can be modified 'up' or 'down' depending on the school and the cohort.
- The lesson plans have been designed to be used flexibly, with some able to span over more than session, as decided on by the teacher.
- The lesson plans have been designed to include elements of good practice that challenges pupils' thinking and provides a sound context for the development of speaking and listening, reading and writing skills.
- Skills from the National Literacy Framework have also been identified as well as links with controlled assessment at KS4.
- Links to relevant websites have been included, these highlight where extra information and activities can be found relating to both Dylan Thomas as well as further literacy support.
- Exemplar assemblies for KS2, 3 and 4 have been included that explore key themes within Dylan's writing and opportunities for reflection during collective worship.
- The materials have been created in Welsh and English to assist schools with using them to support the development of dual literacy skills.
3. Supporting Pupil Attainment and Good Practice in English and Literacy
The resource aims to enhance pupil engagement with a famous Welsh writer, supporting Y Curriculum Cymreig within the National Curriculum. This includes opportunities for pupils to:
- respond to a wide range of materials , both visual, text based and audio;
- develop speaking and listening skills through rich subject matter that challenges thinking;
- write in response to reading and read as build up to writing;
- organise their thinking using graphic organisers and mind maps; and
- research key facts and information that will support their speaking and provide content for writing.
