Unit 5: Immunity and vaccination

Immunity is the resistance of an organism to infection, disease, or other unwanted biological invasion.

Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material (the vaccine) to produce immunity to a disease.

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe how the immune system works in farm animals
  • Define the terms 'induced' and 'innate' immunity
  • Explain the difference between the animal's humoral response and cell mediated response to infection
  • Explain how vaccines vary in their mechanisms
