Summary

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce young pupils to the skills of sending, receiving, striking and travelling with a ball. As the activity progresses the pupils will be play simple ball games with easy-to-follow rules. The lesson promotes the conventions of fair play, honest competition and sporting behaviour.

Objectives

  • Pupils will be introduced to the skill of kicking a ball
  • Pupils will be encouraged to participate in simple ball games with rules of play

Learning outcomes

  • Pupils will be able to send, receive, kick and travel with a ball
  • Pupils will understand that games need to have rules so that all can enjoy and have fun
  • Pupils will be encouraged to play the games fairly and honestly

Prior learning required

  • Pupils should be familiar with playing with a large ball
  • Pupils should have a good awareness of how to use space and be able to work cooperatively

Timings

  • Introductory explanation and warm-up = 10 minutes
  • Main session = 30 minutes
  • Plenary and warm down = 10 minutes

Suggestions for differentiation

  • Pupils can practise in pairs walking to and kicking a still ball
  • Small groups can practise kicking a moving ball in a circle of friends
  • Most able pupils can develop better ball control by taking the "ball for a walk"

Curriculum links

  • PSE - during the warm up and warm down discuss ways of keeping fit and staying healthy
  • Welsh - simple commands are used throughout the lesson eg rhedyg - run, sefwch -stand, stopwch - stop etc
