In 1842 the Chartists organised another petition. Although the petition was signed by 3,317,702 people, which was more than 50% of Britain's adult male population, it was again rejected by Parliament. Once again there were riots and over 1,500 people were arrested. Workers at Cyfarthfa and Dowlais went on strike in protest against Parliament's decision. The employers responded by sacking men known to be Chartists.
By 1843 the British economy began to improve. As unemployment fell, so did the support for Chartism. Although there was another brief revival during the economic recession of 1848, the Chartist movement gradually faded away.
