Summary

In 1188, Archdeacon of Brecon, Gerald of Wales (also known as Giraldus Cambrensis and Gerald y Cymro) made a three-month journey around Wales starting at Hereford. He was preaching to raise recruits for the crusades, but found time to write a detailed description of his journey, called An Itinerary through Wales in which he described what he saw as well as the history, gossip and legends of the places he had passed through.

Aims and objectives

  • to introduce Gerald of Wales as a famous figure from Welsh history
  • to get the pupils to think about what is noteworthy in their settlement
Timings

One hour for the online activity and worksheet 1
40 minutes for the second worksheet

Further activity suggestions

Write your own descriptions of the journey to school.
Compile a photo album/display of local landmarks.
Draw the descriptions Gerald gives of the six places in the online activity.

Special needs

You will need to have a map of Wales handy and mark the difference between land and sea on worksheet 1.

For worksheet 2 you will need to prepare photos of local landmarks.
