The principle behind this resource is to supplement pupils' investigations into puppets and how they are made by taking apart a puppet on screen. This could supplement activities involving investigating puppets and learning how they are put together. It is rarely possible for pupils to disassemble real puppets. Pupils will have to use spatial awareness to transfer their experiences on screen to the real world. The second activity models how to do a running stitch online. Suitable for Year 1 or 2 Using a non-interactive whiteboard Pupils can practise and have fun playing the second activity. The more they practise the more they should understand how to do a running stitch before trying out the real thing. The teacher may like to use the game for those who are waiting to be shown how to do the stitch or for those who have finished. Prior learning required Pupils should have used glue before, cut card with scissors and know that needles can be dangerous. Aims and objectives Pupils should be taught the basic principles of sewing fabrics. Timings Teachers should discuss with pupils the parts involved in making a glove puppet and the first activity could take 10 to 15 minutes to discuss and illustrate. The second activity can be used by teaching assistants, pupils or teachers more independently and therefore has no time limit. Suggestions for group activities Pupils should have opportunities to explore other types of puppets. They should also have opportunities to design and make a simple puppet using fabrics and sewing techniques. Suggestions for differentiation Pupils may need one-to-one support in learning to sew. Some pupils will progress further and may try other stitches. Curriculum links KS1 Design and technology: focus statement At key stage 1, pupils should be taught to work with a limited range of tools and materials to make simple products. They explore how familiar products work and communicate their ideas as they work. | |||||
