German rearmament worried other countries in Europe. They started looking for allies, although still based on the idea of maintaining peace rather than making war.
The Stresa Front: Britain, France and Italy signed an agreement in Stresa in which they greed to do everything in their power to maintain peace and reduce arms.
France and Russia signed a treaty in which they agreed to assist each other.
Russia and Czechoslovakia signed a treaty in which they agreed to assist each other.
Hitler did not want a united (and therefore stronger) group of countries against Germany.
He signed a pact with Poland, in which each promised not to commit any act of aggression against the other for 10 years.
He also signed the Anglo-German Naval Pact with Britain in June 1935 in which the following was agreed:
Germany would build up her navy.
The German navy would never be made bigger than 35 per cent of the British fleet.
Germany would not have any submarines.
