Unit 18: Intramammary

Intramammary means into the mammary tissue or udder.

Cows and sheep sometimes develop mastitis. This is an infection in the udder that leads to a high somatic cell count and loss of production. It is a very painful condition.

Both preventative and curative intramammary treatments can be used.

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Name the intramammary products used on cattle and sheep
  • Explain their mode of action
  • State the correct method of administering products into the udder.
