Unit 21: Disbudding

Disbudding involves the removal of the horn forming cells at the base of the calf's bud. There are two common methods

  • the hot iron
  • chemical cauterization

This session will look at some legislative issues and the technique of both procedures.

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the welfare legislation in place for disbudding
  • Describe the correct technique of using the hot iron
  • Describe the procedure of chemical cauterization
