Unit 3ii: Environmental causes of ill health

The surroundings or environment, in which an animal is kept, plays a huge role in its health and welfare. Animals have certain needs which must be satisfied if they are to perform to their optimum.


This unit deals with the conditions necessary for optimum production and the reduction of problems that arise from unsuitable environments.

At the end of this session you will be able to explain the effect of the following with respect to the animal's environment:

  • Stocking density, lying conditions and drainage
  • Climatic conditions
  • Requirement for natural and artificial lighting
