Unit 8: Scours

Scouring is the most common disease of young animals and it is the condition that causes most losses, both in terms of death and economic loss through poor growth rates. Scouring is only one symptom of a variety of causes.


This session will deal with scouring in young animals.


At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • State what scouring is and the damage it causes
  • Explain the causes of scouring in farm animals of all ages
  • Name the pathogens that cause scouring in calves and lambs
  • Explain the treatment and prevention strategies available to the farmer.
