Unit 9: Main metabolic disorders

Homeostasis is the process in the body whereby the body maintains a constant level of temperature, heart rate, respiration rate and the correct levels of different chemicals in the blood e.g. calcium.


If there is an imbalance in the body for any reason, then the resulting condition is called a metabolic disease or disorder.


At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Name the main metabolic disorders in cattle and sheep
  • Explain the causes of the disorders
  • Describe common treatments
  • Evaluate existing preventative measures.
