6. Main conclusions from latest survey of visitors to the Brecon Beacons National Park

(The survey was undertaken in 2005 and interviewed over 1,000 people at seven locations across the National Park).

  • Most of the day visitors to the park come from Wales, most of the staying visitors from South East England and the West Midlands.
  • For most visitors (92%) the main reason for visiting the park was scenery and peace and quiet.
  • Most visitors were over 35 years old, more wealthy than average and only 30% of visits were made from family groups with children.
  • Most respondents enjoyed walking as an activity in the park, about 68%.
  • Visitors tend to stay in and around the major towns within the park; Brecon, Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye.
  • Many visitors saw shopping as an important activity and the bookshops in Hay-on-Wye were one of the most popular attractions.
  • Many of the visitors are on repeat visits – this was not the first time they had visited the park.
  • The following factors were highlighted as being good or excellent by respondents:
    • Feeling of security and safety – 97.2%
    • Feeling of welcome – 96.3%
    • Quality of attraction – 94.1%
    • Helpful local people- 93.3%
    • Quality of local places to eat and drink – 89.5%
    • Quality of shopping – 82%
  • A significant number of respondents would like to see more opportunities for walking, cycling and horseriding.
