THE ROLE OF PRODUCTION MANAGER

In concluding his interview about the role of the Director, Cefin Roberts said that it is a ‘heck of a responsibility’. After you have listened to Angharad Mair Davies’ piece, you will probably agree that the role of the Production Manager is also a ‘heck of a responsibility’. Angharad has now been in that role with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru for seven years and as she describes her job it is clear that she is involved in almost every aspect of the preparation of staging a show with the company – from health and safety to timetables, to bringing all the designers together to create the show, to contacting all the various venues used during the tour. In his conversation, Ceri James, the Lighting Designer, mentioned that teamwork is important with any production, that the production is the result of working together. The Head of Production is certainly an important member of that team. It is significant that Ceri and Angharad stress that you do not have to be on the stage, acting, to work in the theatre – so many other opportunities are available. It is worth noting that Angharad also emphasises that Welsh-speaking designers and stage managers are like ‘gold dust’.
